Equal Starting Position Quality
Every potential starting intersection should have roughly equal access to diverse resources and high-probability numbers. We score each position and minimize the gap between the best and worst spots.
No Adjacent Same-Resource Tiles
When two or three tiles of the same resource sit next to each other, it creates resource deserts elsewhere. Our constraint system prevents this clustering for a fairer game.
How Our Balance Algorithm Works
Our fair Catan board generatordoesn't just shuffle tiles randomly. It applies multiple constraint layers to guarantee balance:
- Resource Scattering — Hex tiles are placed so that no two adjacent tiles share the same resource type, ensuring geographic diversity.
- Number Distribution — High-probability tokens (6, 8) and low-probability tokens (2, 12) are spread evenly. Adjacent 6-and-8 placement is blocked.
- Position Scoring — Every intersection is scored based on adjacent resource variety and number probability. The board is optimized until all positions fall within an acceptable quality range.
- Balance Score — Each generated board receives a 0-100 balance score. Higher scores mean fairer games. You can see this score instantly after generation.
The result: a balanced Catan board where skill — not seat position — determines who wins.
