A standard Settlers of Catan board consists of 19 hexagonal tiles arranged in a honeycomb pattern. These catan hex tiles represent six terrain types: forest (wood), fields (wheat), pasture (sheep), hills (brick), mountains (ore), and one desert tile that produces no resources.
Each hex tile (except the desert) receives a number token from 2 to 12. When the dice are rolled, every tile matching that number produces resources for adjacent settlements. Numbers like 6 and 8 are rolled most frequently, making their placement crucial for balanced gameplay.
Players build settlements at the intersections of hex tiles and connect them with roads. Each settlement collects resources from its adjacent tiles. Upgrading to a city doubles the resource output, making strategic placement a key to victory.
The first player to reach 10 victory points wins. Points come from settlements (1 point), cities (2 points), longest road, largest army, and development cards. Whether playing settlers of catan online or at the table, a well-balanced board setup ensures a fair and competitive game.
